$13.7M Invested in Affordable Housing

Three big actions today prioritizing affordable housing solutions which will see $13.7M invested by the City of Calgary

These new investments include:

  • A $6M City of Calgary capital grant program for urban Indigenous housing organizations and projects.

  • The sale of 3 parcels of surplus City land to non-profit affordable housing providers to create as many as 100 homes. We are also creating a one-time grant program that will provide up to $75K per door to non-profit housing developers to expedite development.

  • The City of CalgaryCalgary Homeless Foundation, and United Way of Calgary will each contribute $200K towards a community-based program that supports the provision of first month’s rent as well as a damage deposit to overcome initial housing affordability barriers. This will assist people living on low income, individuals fleeing domestic violence, newcomers, or those who have experienced a financial disruption and find themselves temporarily unhoused or insecurely housed.

Budget Adjustments Recap

Calgary City Council protected the Low Income Transit Pass, protected community funding for programs like the HELP team (formerly DOAP team) and the Distress Centre, invested in Downtown safety for everyone, “fixed” the potholes with more investment in streets, and accelerated the development of more housing around our train stations – all while keeping the tax rate below inflation and population growth.

November Budget Adjustments

Calgarians are facing a rising cost-of-living, with housing and groceries seeing the highest increases. Calgary is expected to add 75,000 people by the end of 2024. This means more Calgarians than ever are making use of City services and infrastructure.
