Budget Adjustments

Calgarians are facing a rising cost-of-living, with housing and groceries seeing the highest increases. Calgary is expected to add 75,000 people by the end of 2024. This means more Calgarians than ever are making use of City services and infrastructure.

The current budget adjustments proposed by City Administration call for a 3.6% tax increase from all existing properties in 2025. This is in a context in which Calgary has seen the highest population growth rates in the country.

Lithium-ion Battery Safety

Lithium-ion battery fires are a growing concern world-wide due to the lack of regulation around manufacturing and transporting batteries, as well as the lack of awareness about the severity of lithium-ion battery fires and awareness about how to prevent them. The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) has identified lithium battery awareness and prevention as a top priority that can save lives and prevent property damage.

Lithium-ion batteries are found in a number of devices, including cellphones, laptops, e-scooters, e-bikes, e-cigarettes, toys, electric power tools and electric vehicles.

Recently, the CFD joined with the Toronto Fire Department to appeal to the federal government for stricter regulations.

Handle damaged batteries with care. If a battery is hot, swollen, leaking or producing smoke, do not use it. Dispose of lithium-ion batteries responsibly by taking them to one of The City of Calgary’s Eco Centres or visit Recycleyourbatteries.ca for more recycling locations.

Prepare your Home and Yard for Winter

Wondering how to prepare your home for winter? The Homeowner Water Fall Guide Checklist is a great place to start.

You’ll find reminders and tips like:

  • Check your toilets, taps, humidifier, hot water heater, water softener and other water using devices for leaks.
  • Turn off your outdoor water supply and winterize your irrigation system to avoid winter leaks.
  • Check the Watering 101 Guides to find out when to stop watering plants, shrubs, trees and lawns.
  • Leave plant debris in plant beds over winter to provide habitat for pollinators.

When it comes to residential and household leaks, toilets, faucets and outdoor irrigation are the most common culprits. Our library of Homeowner Water Guides provides step-by-step guidance to identify and repair leaks in our homes, ideas to improve water efficiency and tips to prepare yards for winter.

Together, we can make every drop count.

Richmond Green Park Design

Where We Are At: Project Update November 2024

The city's project team has been working to finalize the detailed design plans. Guided by thorough technical evaluations and feasibility studies, we’re carefully balancing these insights with the valuable feedback we received from Calgarians. Our goal is to create a park that not only reflects the community’s priorities but also aligns with practical design considerations.
